In early 18th-century Venice, the Ospedale della Pietà takes in young orphaned girls and trains them in music. Hidden from public view, often masked or behind a grille, the all-female orchestra performs for the institution's wealthy patrons. Cecilia, 20, excels as a violinist-until the arrival of a new music master, Antonio Vivaldi, upends her life and that of the Ospedale.
