Letters, messages, confessions, poems, diaries... Frida Kahlo wrote herself as she painted herself. During a show with the appearance of a fiesta, mariachi in support, Sophie Faucher plunges head first into the literary and musical universe of this woman of genius, an outstanding figure of Mexican painting. Her writings, unlike her paintings, were not intended for the general public. I will always write to you with my eyes," she said. This is an intimate look at the life of Frida, painter, Frida wounded in her body, Frida activist, Frida in love with beings and words.
Frida Kahlo - Correspondence was produced for the very first time by the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec on the occasion of the exhibition Au Pays des merveilles: Les aventures surréalistes des femmes artistes au Mexique et aux États-Unis.

Elinor Frey is a prominent musician who takes immense pleasure in exploring the many facets of her beloved instrument, the cello, as well as its distant relatives such as the viola da gamba.

An accomplished researcher and musicologist, she has also unearthed an impressive body of forgotten works, significantly enriching her repertoire.

She devotes an important part of her career to recording and publishing on modern editions her most remarkable discoveries, many of which come from Italy, one of the first countries to have introduced the cello as a solo instrument.

In her quest to perform these eclectic musics on the best instruments, Elinor has commissioned several from her favourite craftsmen, including internationally renowned Quebec luthier Francis Beaulieu, who created for Elinor a five-string cello and a viola da gamba.

Alone on stage, surrounded by seven instruments, Elinor Frey, JUNO Award Winner in 2023, invites you to discover their distinct personalities and colours while recounting the history of each of them.

Tous les matins with Elinor, a reference to the film Tous les matins du monde, is a recital that is both intimate and rich in discovery, highlighting the most beautiful chaconnes by Dall'Abaco, Bach, Colombi, Supriani, Ortiz, Telemann and Dallapiccola, as well as the piece Les Pleurs (Sainte-Colombe) which is excerpted from the film.

When Mia met Dani, she was singing in a room filled with microphones, by herself; he sat, about 20 feet away, in a different room entirely with a group of instrumentalists wearing masks. Connecting them was a complex sound system that allowed them to perform “together” without the possibility of transmitting Covid-19. For months, they made music through a speaker, separated by walls and wires. It was an unlikely way to meet, to say the least; but it was the start of a wonderful friendship and musical partnership.

Since then, Mia and Dani have worked together at Yale on operas, concerts, masterclasses, and innumerable jam sessions. Sharing an eclectic love of music, together they have played works from John Dowland to Joni Mitchell.

Knowlton has always been home for Mia. She gave her debut voice recital with Carmen Picard at the Theatre Lac Brome in 2021 and is beyond excited to return for the third year in a row, this time with Dani.

LE NOEUD
une pièce de Johnna Adams

Shows • Theater play
In French

With Édith Paquet and Sandra Dumaresq

A new collaboration begins between Productions Martin Leclerc and Écoumène, with a first theatrical production entitled Le Noeud. The play was sold out at Théâtre La Licorne and will be back on the road in spring 2024.

One of the reasons for the play's success is its sensitive, realistic treatment of real issues shaking society today. It illustrates the encounter between the mother of an 11-year-old boy and his teacher. The atmosphere is tense; the former wants to know what drove her son to take his own life, while the latter, shaken and confused, is slow to enlighten her. Despite clashing visions and gnawing guilt, the two women work together to retrace the events and try to understand. What was the source of this child's distress? Was he a victim or an executioner? Their verbal jousting, raw and cruel, is both epic and surprising.

In this closed-door play, playwright Johnna Adams questions the boundaries of freedom of expression. The playwright also examines the delicate relationship between parents and teachers. Translated from the American by Maryse Warda and directed by Guillermina Kerwin.
