In 1958, Suite canadienne, a piece now considered foundational to Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, was broadcast during the concert hour on Radio-Canada. More than fifty years later, a troupe ventures to pay tribute to the work from a decolonial and introspective perspective, questioning notions of national identity through dance. Olivier Godin immerses himself in their rehearsal routines and integrates an element of hybridity between documentary and fiction by bringing back to life Ludmilla Chiriaeff, the original choreographer of Suite canadienne, who passed away in 1996. Reality thus borrows from the fabricated capacities of cinema, highlighting the playful and reflective potential of art in all its forms.

Olivier Godin is a Quebec filmmaker and screenwriter who studied cinema at Collège Ahuntsic and Concordia University. His short films La boutique de forge (2012) and Feu de Bengale (2014) each won the award for Best Canadian Short Film at the Festival du nouveau cinéma. In 2013, he received the CALQ Award for Full Love, which was voted Best Work of Art and Experimentation. In 2014, the first retrospective of his work was presented at the Cinémathèque québécoise, the same year Nouvelles, Nouvelles, his highly acclaimed second feature film, was released. He is also the author of the feature films Les arts de la parole (2016), En attendant Avril (2018), Il n'y a pas de faux métier (2020), and Irlande cahier bleu (2023). La suite canadienne (2023) is his first foray into documentary filmmaking. He occasionally writes about cinema, mainly in the magazine Hors champ.
This film is presented for free as part of the Journées de la Culture, within the framework of the "Festival du film sur l'art près de chez vous".
